Free two-factor authenticator

Microsoft Authenticator is a free security app and a two-factor authenticator. This app allows you to log into your Microsoft accounts through your mobile devices. Like most authentication tools, the app generates a code that you need to log into an account. It is helpful for quick sign-ins as it's faster than email or text codes.

Microsoft Authenticator app works cross-platform and features multi-account support. You also have the option to utilize this application for the backup and restoration of all your other account credentials. Do note that it doesn't work for non-Microsoft websites and services

What is the app used for?

Microsoft Authenticator helps to make your accounts more secure. Instead of a password, you can sign in to your accounts through a fingerprint scan, face recognition, or a PIN. To beef up your account’s security, the app utilizes two-factor verification, which requires you to provide codes before logging in. Like Google Authenticator or LastPass Authenticator, it generates a random six-digit code every 30 seconds

This tool makes it easier to access any of your Microsoft accounts through codes. However, this feature does not work on non-Microsoft sites. You will need to provide your username and password on other account types, such as Google and Facebook, before you generate codes for them. Furthermore, it only supports websites that use the TOTP—time-based one-time password—standard. It does not work on HOTP standard code services, such as (X) Twitter and banking apps.

First-time users need to create their credentials and choose whether to use the app for personal, work, or school. After a successful login, you will need to authenticate with a code. Once you input the code, it will link to all your Microsoft accounts, and you can use it for no-password sign-ins. For non-Microsoft accounts, you need to add them to your list in the app. The websites will then require you to provide a code for every login.

Standout feature

In contrast to other authenticator apps, Microsoft Authenticator distinguishes itself with its backup and restore functionality. This feature enables the swift transfer of your accounts to a new device by backing up your account credentials and associated app settings, including the account order, to the cloud. Using this app, you can quickly recover your information on a new device, potentially preventing the inconvenience of being locked out or needing to recreate accounts when switching devices manually.

It is important to note that for a smooth and seamless transition, you must have an iCloud account associated with each backup storage location. Additionally, you have the option to store multiple accounts in a single location.

Get your accounts secured

Microsoft Authenticator is a free two-factor authentication app ensuring secure access to your Microsoft accounts on mobile devices. Its cross-platform functionality and multi-account support set it apart from its peers. Beyond Microsoft accounts, the app also offers backup and restoration for various credentials. While it enhances security through fingerprint, face recognition, or PIN, it's limited only to TOTP-supported sites. However, iCloud association is crucial for smooth transitions.
